Opportunities pass us by unnoticed and our creativity drains away. Just one negative thought can trigger stress hormones, but when our brains keep repeating our negative thoughts, unnecessary feelings of despair bubble. We might as well have a panic sign behind our eyelids and an alarm shrieking in our ears.
This chronic high alert state shuts down digestion, removes attention from anything but the perceived threat – including memory, which leaves us scattered, frazzled and disjointed. We’re now stuck in survival mode, preventing us from focusing on living gratefully. The blood-flow drains energy from task management and executive skills, diverting to muscles for escape. All we want to DO is escape – escape our suffering. We feel victimised and irrational, fuelling anger which is either internalised or blows-up so we want to fight. Research reveals that negative thinking can literally shrink the hippocampus which plays a key role in learning, memory and managing emotions. Impulse control is reduced and the brain’s default mode becomes affected, eroding self-esteem and making the world-view more negative. We lose track of what is important to us and become concerned with nitty-gritty to gain a sense of control.
